Inpatient Care for Adolescents

Old Vineyard’s Adolescent Inpatient Program is designed to provide a supportive, nurturing environment for teens ages 12 to 17 to find health and healing.

When your teen is in crisis, we provide a safe place where problems can be identified and solutions are explored. In treating intensive psychiatric conditions where the likelihood of harm — to self or others — is significant, our teens have a highly structured day geared to teach them how to cope.

Our Acute Inpatient Program

  • It all begins with an assessment. A comprehensive intake assessment is done upon admission to help to craft an individualized treatment program for the patient. Along with the assessment, a complete psychiatric and physical analysis is extremely helpful in understanding the past and current psychiatric needs of the adolescent. This key step allows our staff to provide more effective treatment.
  • We evaluate the role that medication may play. In many cases of acute psychiatric crisis, medication stabilization is the first step toward alleviating the individual’s psychiatric emergency.
  • Treatment is person-centered. It’s tailored to the unique preferences of the individual, namely the values and needs that are identified and agreed upon in partnership with the treatment team. In person-centered care, our patients receive appropriate, timely care that not only meets their needs but emphasizes their particular strengths.
  • Group therapy is a vital component. Structured therapeutic groups are a key part of the psychiatric treatment programming. Many times through the process of therapy, patients gain a deeper insight into their individual issues and learn new, and more appropriate, coping skills for their mental health condition.
  • The days are highly structured. Groups are based in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and they also build problem solving skills through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), recreational therapy and pet-assisted therapy.
  • We provide academic instruction. Daily academic instruction is taught by certified teachers during the school year.
  • Family involvement is important for success. Comprehensive care includes involvement from the individual’s family or guardian to help provide education about the benefits of the treatment process.
  • Planning for aftercare and discharge. Aftercare planning includes medication management education, community resource information, relapse prevention education and appropriate discharge referrals so your teen will have the tools needed to continue the path of wellness after leaving our program.

Treatment components may include:

  • Evidence-based cognitive behavioral programs
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) which focuses on interpersonal communication, distress tolerance, mindfulness and emotional regulation to providing adolescents with enhanced coping skills
  • Individualized workbooks based on diagnosis
  • School sessions during the academic year
  • Journaling
  • Recreational therapy
  • Pet-assisted therapy
  • Arts and crafts
